Frequently Asked Questions
What is a domain name?
A domain name is the online identification of your company or business. It serves as the contact address that enables your customers to access your website on the internet. Domain names are unique and consist of two parts: your company or business name followed by the extension, which represents the type of TLD (Top-Level Domain) you choose to use, such as .com, .us, .co, .net, etc; for example: miempresa.us, oneitbox.com, Google.com.
How to choose the best domain name option?
To choose the best domain name option, you should be quite creative and try to figure out how your customers can find and remember you more easily on the internet. The best domains are those that are short, use relevant keywords, and are easy to remember. You can try combining two simple words that identify your business.
When selecting a domain name, you can include letters, numbers, or hyphens. However, it’s best to avoid special characters to make it easy to remember and type into a web browser.
How do I know if a domain name is available?
On the internet, there are countless active domain names, some of which may be very similar to the one you’re interested in. However, there are many different extensions that distinguish one domain from another (.us, .net, .com, .co, .org, .xyz, etc.). You can check if a domain is available for registration through a «Whois» query. Additionally, by using our domain search tool (Whois here), you can not only find out if a domain is available for registration but also explore a range of extension options and domain name variations that might interest you if your preferred choice is not available.
Can I change my domain name after I have activated it?
Once you choose a domain name and complete the registration process, and it becomes active, it’s not possible to correct or modify it. However, you can change it by acquiring a new domain name of your preference and associating the new domain name with your hosting service as the new primary domain.
Why should I renew my domain name?
The only way to ensure that your domain name functions, along with all the associated services (website, corporate email, applications, etc.), is to keep its registration active. Therefore, it must be renewed periodically in registration cycles of a minimum of one calendar year and up to five consecutive years. If the domain is not renewed before its expiration date, it will cease to function, and you may lose it.
What hosting can I use with my domain name?
All domain names, regardless of their extension or registrar, can be used with the web hosting plans offered by One It Box. Likewise, if you purchase a domain name with us and have your hosting service on other servers, you can link them through DNS record pointing (if it’s primary DNS, we handle the pointing for you). Just keep in mind that when making a DNS change, it may take a few hours to be reflected and function correctly.
Why do I need a domain name?
Having a domain name and a website not only helps position your company on the internet and seize greater business opportunities, ultimately boosting your sales, but also enhances your brand, providing assurance and credibility to your customers.
Nowadays, it’s more favorable if your website has its own domain rather than being an extension or subdomain of another company, such as WordPress, Wix, or any free website hosting platform. A custom domain name instills greater trust and credibility in your customers.
What is the ID protection?
When registering your domain name, your contact information such as name, email, and cell phone number is associated with the domain registration, and this information can be viewed by anyone conducting a public «Whois» query. With ID protection, your contact information will be concealed, replaced by the registrar’s information, and this will help you safeguard against potential identity theft, spam, or even reduce the chances of a website hack.
How long can I activate a domain name?
A domain name is registered for a minimum of one calendar year and a maximum period of five consecutive years. After the current registration year expires, the domain name can be renewed for equal consecutive periods.
Can I transfer my current domain name to One It Box?
Of course, if you already have an active domain name with another provider, you can transfer your registration to One It Box. This way, you can streamline the management of all your services conveniently and easily. To transfer your domain name, you just need to request the EPP code (aut–code) along with the domain name unlock from your current provider and ensure that the domain name is still valid. We will take care of the transfer process for you.
What is ICANN?
ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) is the international governing body for domain names and TLDs in general. Its role is to ensure the proper use of domain names, regulate and enforce protocols in processes such as registration, renewal, transfers and disputes over domain ownership.
